Part of a series of poems which take Francesca Woodman’s photographs as prompts, Note was inspired by a self-portrait of the artist hanging from a doorframe. Behind her, a Post-It note can be seen on the door. The poem suggests a series of conjectures as to what might be written on that note – sketching a brief context on which a reader might project their own plot. I was perhaps also remembering Eugene O’Neill’s short play Before Breakfast, which uses a similar turn from the ordinary to the extraordinary.
